A Short Review: Star Wars - Scoundrels

Once again Timothy Zahn has struck gold with his latest Star Wars novel, Scoundrels; a tale of corruption, thievery, and revenge.

Scoundrels features such classic characters like Han Solo, Chewbacca, Lando Calrissian, and one surprise appearance. We also come to know of Bink, her twin sister Tavia, Dozer, Zerba, Kell, Rachele, and Dayja. Also featured in the story is an Expanded Universe favorite, Winter.

What was enjoyable about this novel was that not only did it feature characters we know, but it showed what they were up to between Episode IV: A New Hope and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Also answered was the all elusive question of what the heck happened to all of Han's reward money?!?

The placement in the timeline was also a negative for me at the beginning of this novel. With both Han and Lando seeing each other now, it felt like it would take away from what we've come to know as that gut wrenching, what's going to happen moment when the two come face-to-face on Bespin. But ultimately by novel's end Zahn had made sure to restore that moment.

A little bit longer Star Wars novel for a change, Scoundrels comes in somewhere at around 390 pages, but fear not, it's a simple read and will have you so engrossed that you won't want to put it down.

Star Wars - Scoundrels by Timothy Zahn earns a 5/5.

Up And Coming: Aya Knight (Author)

While taking a trip to Orlando, FL. this weekend the girlfriend and I stopped into Sci-Fi City, where we were given the opportunity to meet Aya Knight the author of "The Chronicles of Kale: A Dragon's Awakening" who happened to be in store signing autographs.

Unlike many I've had the privilege to meet while at a signing Aya Knight was very pleasant, up beat, and actually wanted to be there.

And bonus, the autograph was free! How many of us can say we got an autograph for free?

As for the book "The Chronicles of Kale: A Dragon's Awakening" it's a fantasy novel that would be placed in the Young Adult sections at your local bookstore.

But so is the Twilight and Harry Potter novels, so you might as well pick up this novel and support a up and coming author.

And if you would like the chance to meet her and happen to be in the Central Florida area, she will be attending the Megacon next February.

Graphic Novels To Big Screen

So are you tired of seeing graphic novels on the big screen? We sure as heck are. Over the past few years studios have been pumping them out as fast as they could, and there just doesn't seem to be an end in sight.

Films like 300, Sin City, The Spirit, and soon to be released Watchmen are just a few that have been released. The problem here is all the movies are almost identical to one another. They're all filmed with a generic style, and in most cases are shot in a grey scale. There is nothing pleasant about watching these movies.

Yes we know the graphic novels were superb, in fact we enjoyed the novels for 300 and the Watchmen, but as movies they are not the same.

Because everyone has to be so P.C. in today's world the novels have been greatly edited for content. If they were to be filmed as they were wrote they would be given an NC17 rating, which would cause the studios producing them to lose money because there audience was limited.

Though in retrospect children should not be going to see R rated movies, especially those of 300 and Sin City. But that's a parental issue we will keep out of.

Even with numerous complaints being sent to the studios to stop making these movies it doesn't appear that there will be an end to this trend any time soon.

We however will be saving our money and avoiding anymore of these films. - GJ
