From Newsies To Batman
With the lead roles of Bruce Wayne in Batman, John Connor in Terminator Salvation, his arrest for domestic violence and the recording of his berating of a crew member during filming of Salvation, Christian Bale has made quite a name for himself.

But did you know that Christian Bale's big break in film came in a Disney musical called Newsies?
That's right Christian was Jack "Cowboy" Kelly, an orphan boy that danced and sang as he delivered his newspapers. Oh and he wore a handkerchief around his neck, adorable right?

Seeing Christian in Newsies makes it easier to understand why he makes sure to get the tough guy persona now.
Of course this post would not be complete without actually seeing and hearing Christian's performance from Newsies.

Economy May Hurt Sci-Fi Entertainment
Okay so let's cut the scope of this article down to futuristic space operas/dramas are in trouble. (Science Fiction as a whole will be fine, mostly because of the sub-genres Horror and Fantasy.)
We all know it is very expensive to produce a TV show; sets have to be built, writers and actors to be paid, and advertising to be performed to draw a crowd. Unfortunately it costs a lot more to do a Science Fiction show based in outer space or in the future, because besides the normal sets (which are more extensive in themselves), a lot of computer graphics also come into play and that's where a lot of money ends up being spent.
Even before the economy down slide studios were cutting these shows because of cost. Some prime examples are Dark Angel, Space Above And Beyond, Futurama, and our favorite show all time FIREFLY.

Now unfortunately even shows that have made it two, three, even five years are looking at an end. Battlestar Galactica is in its final season, there are currently no new Star Trek TV series, and though FOX hasn't admitted it just yet, we are probably seeing the final season of The Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.
The only gleam of hope at the moment for this brand of entertainment is the upcoming Stargate Universe series that will be airing on the SciFi Channel.
The effects of the economy are not only affecting the small screen, but the silver screen as well. As studios look into what should be cut back it's almost a guarantee that space operas are to be dropped, just for the simple fact that they do not produce the same results stupid fart joke movies do.
The much anticipated Halo movie has already become one such casualty in this time of economic crisis, and thus lays the foundation of many other movies to be shelved.

But we can always hope for a huge economic surge towards the better, one that will allow studios to go ahead with plans to make those shelved movies, someday we may yet get our Halo, along with others like Gears of War, Robotech, or any other space opera our minds can imagine.
And here's hoping. -GJ

It's In The Name
With the fourth installment of the Terminator franchise, Salvation, yet to hit theaters (May 22, 2009) you wouldn't think Sony and Warner Brothers would already be discussing plans for a fifth, let alone sixth movie, but you'd be wrong.
In fact these entertainment giants have already green lighted the fifth film and even signed Christian Bale (John Connor) for all three films.
There's just one really big problem with a new set of films, and that is a little show currently running on FOX called The Sarah Connor Chronicles. Rumor has it that Salvation picks up after the events of the third film, Rise Of The Machines, but this ends up conflicting with The Sarah Connor Chronicles which takes place prior to Rise Of The Machines. See everything done in the past ultimately changes the future, so this little TV show, is going to complicate matters more than some may realize.

Another problem that will arise, is that when you go to the movies to see a Terminator flick, you expect to see the original terminator himself Arnold Schwarzenegger. There's a smaller budget when producing a TV series so people understand that the big name actor will end up being a no show.
Something else to consider for Christian Bale is that he may have to give up the role of Batman due to the filming schedules. Though after that last performance, that would be okay too.
There is always the possibility that these new movies will be a huge success, but we wouldn't want to bet our money on that. -GJ

The Machines From The Terminator Universe, Intelligent?
By now we have all seen the three Terminator movies and are anxiously awaiting the premier of the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Some maybe even ready for the fourth movie that is rumored to begin production soon.
But the question here has to be asked, are the machines actually all that intelligent? I mean they had a good concept in the first movie. They couldn't kill John Connor in the future so send a machine back in time to kill his mother, Sarah Connor.
Great idea, just one little problem. Sarah Connor has proven to be a tougher opponent than John Connor. In the first movie the terminator failed to kill Sarah Connor, in the second and even third it was the terminator’s job to kill John Connor as a teenager, but both times there was involvement from his mother that cost the terminator’s their lives and allowed the future to continue the way it was.

The new TV series the Sarah Connor Chronicles seems to most fans of this saga that it will be a great watch. It falls between movies two and three, so again John Connor is a teenager, but this time along with his mother he will have a new female protector played by Summer Glau (River Tam; Firefly, Serenity). This is where I feel the machines fail to show intelligence.
Why would you bother to keep making attempts on John Connor as a teenager when you know Sarah Connor will be getting involved? You already know that if you could successfully get rid of Sarah Connor like you attempted in the first Terminator movie, there would be no John Connor, so why not try killing Sarah Connor as a teenager, or take it one step farther, go kill Sarah Connor’s mother.
Maybe the machines shouldn’t even focus on the Connor family altogether. Why not eliminate other families that assist John Connor in the future. John Connor never made a stand by himself it was always as the leader of the human army, so if you take away his army, you take away his victory. And they say machines are smarter than man.
With all this said, I still plan on watching and enjoying the Sarah Connor Chronicles and who knows maybe the fourth movie won’t be as bad as the third.
The Sarah Connor Chronicles airs in January on FOX.
