Everything from our local comic book store, Coliseum of Comics, was picked up outta the free bin this week.

FCBD Score

Got up early and headed to our local comic book store, Coliseum of Comics, to celebrate Free Comic Book Day (FCBD).

For those that don't know about FCBD, it occurs the first Saturday in May at participating comic book stores, and it's a chance to get some comics absolutely FREE.

For the event each of the different publishers create special preview issues or shortened issues, often containing multiple stories, letting fans know what all they have to offer.

Over at Coliseum of Comics, we had the opportunity to score 5 of the free comics; and here is what we came away with...

Also scored another free comic because Coliseum of Comics is running a promotion for those that bring in their Avengers movie ticket they can either get a copy of Thor #600 or The New Avengers #27. Since we already have a copy of Thor #600, we took The New Avengers #27 with the Coliseum of Comics variant cover.

While waiting for friends to show up, we also took the opportunity to sit in on a Heroclix game demo. It was a quick demo, just a two piece game, but can easily say this game would be so addictive if we had money. Would love to write or create battle reports for this game too, so anyone that knows a very cheap way for us to get involved in the game, hit us up in the comments.

In case you're curious I won playing as War Machine, while the store employee (sorry can't remember his name) played as Green Lantern. That's right, Marvel vs DC matchups are possible; in fact Heroclix makes figures for Marvel, DC, Watchmen, Halo, plus many more, and all can be mixed and matched to play your game.

Participating in the demo also earned me a free promotional piece; it was hard to turn down the War Machine piece, but when I heard him say Psylocke I was sold.

All in all Free Comic Book Day was a fantastic day and we'd like to thank Coliseum of Comics for making it even better.

To The Comic Book Store #56

Not only did we walk out of our local comic book store (Coliseum of Comics) with free comics this week, but we were also able to meet the creative team behind The Ultimate 7; Robert Wawrzyniak (Creator/Writer) and Shawn Surface (Pencils/Illustrator).

The guys were not only nice enough to sign copies of The Ultimate 7 but were more than willing to discuss the series and it's future in great detail; give you an opportunity to pick up issue 3 a week in advance (hits shelves 12/14/11); and Shawn Surface was also ready and willing to do a free commission pencil sketch. A good time was had by all.

Just when one thinks they are making progress catching up on one's comics, Free Comic Book Day at our local comic book store, Coliseum of Comics, just happens to roll around again (actually if you haven't realized this happens every Wednesday).

But this week I was well prepared; First I was able to acquire Eight (8) free comics, and then used my stamp card provided via the store which was in the amount of $10 which allowed me to pick up a grab bag with ten comics, one new release, and three from the $1 bin.

And of course without further delay, here they all are...

So there you go, twenty-two (22) comics and not a single penny spent.

Not all of these issues are top notch but hey free is free, right?

Add Audio To Comic Books?

Overheard while shopping at Coliseum of Comics a customer asked one of the employees the following question...

"Do you think comic books should be like greeting cards and play sound when you open it?"

He suggested that it would be neat if you opened a comic and a song started playing followed by an announcer to give out a little information on the issue. i.e. "Marvel Presents, X-Men #666, By Writer, With Artist...etc."

Of course this seems like a "neat" idea until you stop and think about this one tiny little thing...$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. That's right, you add audio and just like those once 99 cent greeting cards, you just tripled the price; and at already $2.99 to $3.99 per issue can we really afford to have this luxury?

Now if you wanted to have audio clips or even an entire issue narrated then our suggestion would be to stick that kinda stuff into the digital comics, but leave the print ones on silent; hey it's worked this long.

So what do you think; would you pay extra for your comics to have audio? Would you like to have this option for digital releases? Would you actually give a crap if you read comics?

Dune Comic Books?

Do you remember what you were doing back when Dune released in 1984? No? Well I know where I was; not even born.

Twenty seven years later though people are still talking about Dune which may or may not have anything to do with the remake in the works (2014).

The question here though isn't about the movie but rather "Would Dune make for a good comic book setting/series?"

This was asked of the two employees at our local comic book store (Coliseum of Comics) by a woman who knows the son of an artist in the industry (didn't catch a name) who wants to break into the business and she was helping to find a setting for his work; being a fan of Dune and a writer herself, she thought this would be the best way for him/them to go.

Both the employees, and myself, agreed that this was not a route an up and comer wants to take. Back in 1984, possibly; 2011 not so much.

"But the remake, remember the remake will be out soon" she cried a little on the upset side. Again they informed her that if, if the movie was a success it still wouldn't make the sales she would be hoping for and the majority of those purchasing issues would only be die hard Dune fans.

So yes you would sell a few copies of a Dune comic but don't plan on retiring off of it.

Oh Wednesday how we love you so! Actually, we love our local comic book store (Coliseum Of Comics) and their promotion of four (4) FREE comics (with no purchase necessary).

Surprisingly we made it out with out buying anything this week; pretty hard to do considering Marvel's Fear Itself #1 and Deadpool Family - One Shot were both released today.

But we did come away with some really interesting swag this week...

Every Wednesday is "Free Comic Book Day" at our local comic book store, Coliseum of Comics, where you can go and pick up four free comics (per person).

Granted most of these comics are from the early to mid-nineties, with early 2000s mixed in every once and a while, but hey free is free. We do also tend to drop some money from time to time on newer comics as well.

Even though this promotion has been going on for a while and we've taken advantage of it for over the last three months, we've decided to start sharing with you what we come away with on our weekly trip to Coliseum of Comics.
